A Day Like No Other… Leap Day
Today is a day that only happens once ever four years. People born on this day either have to celebrate on Feb. 28th or Mar. 1st. I can only imagine how confusing this would be for a child to keep their date of birth straight.
It is an old Irish legend that today is the day that females can propose to males. But did you know there was a St. Bridget? I’ve heard of St. Patrick, but not Bridget. Well she apparently struck a deal with Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years. Thus the tradition.
Leap Day in some places is known as Bachelors Day. This gets even more interesting. A man had to pay a penalty if he refused a marriage proposal by a woman on Leap Day. This may have been in the form of a garment or a monetary value. Some European countries required twelve pairs of gloves so she can hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.
