Come along with me to Craters Corners and the Anders farm to meet Derek Smythe. This guy made a gut decision to take his college fund and purchase Penelope Anders family’s farm when it was put up at auction. He sacrificed his future for the girl, but did she appreciate it? No. In his own words, she high-tailed it out of Craters Corners as fast as she could. We might ask what would prompt a guy to do a thing like this? Today we’re going to ask him. There he is now, waiting for us on the porch of the country house. Let’s not keep him waiting.
Hi Derek. Thanks for inviting us into your home.
Derek: It’s nice to have you. Come on inside. It’s a little chilly today. Did you have trouble finding the place?
No. Your directions were perfect. What’s that delicious smell?
Derek: Hot Cornbread and Chili. Wanna bowl?
Thanks. I’m not really into jalapenos peppers, but maybe some chili later. You have a lovely home, cozy. Have you ever regretted buying this place?
Derek: Almost every day. I’ve questioned my sanity too, but then I have to recall why I did it and the joy I’ve found within these old walls. God knows better than we do what we need in life.
True. So what made you buy the place? I’ve heard you cashed in your college fund to do it. This isn’t exactly the kind of education your parents had in mind for you when they started it.
Derek: No, but my grandfather would say it was the right education.
So why’d you do it?
Derek: Penelope.
But she left.
Derek: Yes. She left without saying a word. I think she hated me for it, but she’s grateful to me now.
How so?
Derek: She says I kept the place the same and it like she never left, but it’s better, because I’m here now.
So it has worked to your advantage.
Derek: Yes. So how about some chili?
I’d love a bowl.
