I’ve been reading Evermore book 1 in the Immortals series by Alyson Noel. The Immortals is an interesting concept. One immediately thinks Vampire when you think of Immortal because that is normally how they are references, but not in this case. Damen Auguste Esposito is an Immortal. He is the hero in the series, but I’m almost at the end of the book and the heroine Ever just learns what he is and how she has been reincarnated several times over the centuries. A totally different twist on things if you ask me.
So how do Immortal characters fit in the hero category? Do readers accept them as good? bad? In the Twilight series Edward proposed the question to Bella Swan “What if I’m the bad guy? Was he? In his eye he felt that way because he was a Vampire. And he had taken human life before for pleasure, even if he was taking out evil humans. In the Vampire Diaries you have the Originals who are the ultimate Immortal beings in that universe. They can only be destroyed by the oak tree that created them. Even if they can be taken out of living temporarily with a silver dagger to the chest.
I’m sure there are many other forms of Immortal beings out there that I haven’t thought of in fiction or television. What makes these characters heroes? Are they just a different form of the bad boy that readers love to hear about?
What are your thoughts?
Good question, Leanne. I do believe anyone character can be a hero as long as they have the characteristics. I love a good vampire romance, in particular. I suggest you read some of Tina Folsom’s Scanguard series. They are excellent and her heroes are all strong alpha males. Another great author of paranormal is Lyndsay Sands, her Argeneau series is great. Also Kerrelyn Sparks has a great series. Sparks’ Love at Stake series has Were Wolves and even angels. It’s wonderful. Besides, who doesn’t love a bad boy gone good! I’m married to one!
